The problem: The systematic denigration of human dignity by the state

The solution: Mass Protest by the people.

    Conditions: Non-political.Non-partisan.Non

    -Violent. 1 Demand.

1 clear demand: Swift prosecution of criminals immediately responsible for attacks. The evidence is plenty. We know this does not need time.We as a people have to do something. now.

To my dear friends, those of you who will better understand me in English than in Arabic. In these dark times I write you first because what I have to say in Arabic is already accessible in Arabic to those on facebook and twitter.

I want to speak to you about what happened at the Israeli embassy in Giza last Friday. There is much to be said; I will cut to the point.

Firstly, the January 25 revolution is a peaceful one, and all those who ascribed themselves to the revolution also subscribe to one of its founding principles; that of peace. It is not a Ghandian peace, nor the self-restrained peace of Badshah Khan, but it is a peaceful protest except in self-defense. We do not riot, we do not destroy random buildings and loot shops or burn tyres. Anything perpendicular to said principle is not of the Revolution, and we are innocent of it.

Secondly, a government is supposed to represent the will of the people. In practice, there is generous leeway in the application of this ideal with some exceptions to maintain obedience. The Egyptian people as a whole have for over 30 years & historically endured the misrepresentation of their interests and will without exception. The details of the Camp David treaty and Egyptian-Israeli relations need not be delved into here, but it has been the perception of Egyptians in general that the power-balance was entirely lop-sided not in their favor, and this has bred an insurmountable bitterness. Even Turkish coffee, that sweet elixir of wakefulness & contemplation, increases in bitterness the longer stays on a fire. Should not the people who most drink it find the same true when their burning simmers for 30 years? There is no correlation but the analogy stands. Very briefly, the Egyptian government has repeatedly at every opportunity over 30 years desecrated the dignity of its people. I speak not of pride, but dignity. With the revolution, the fall of the façade of the old regime, and the rise of another decrepit autocratic ruler, there are sporadic opportunities for the will of the people to reveal themselves. This was one. I have not yet talked about whether this was the right thing to do or not, but you make a fool of yourself if you think Egyptians are ok with constant derision of Israel to the Palestinians or the killing of Egyptians on the borders. And this is a clear sign for any power that believes oppression is the answer. It has taken less than one cycle of generations (usually 50 years) for a generation to rise and say enough. You can detain us, torture us, make us disappear, but we live on in those who miss us and those who keep our memories alive. This has not happened to me, but the lives of those who have been martyred or are detained or being tortured serve as fuel forever more so long as these egregious injustices we face.

Thirdly, there had been a publicized march in protest planned for many days before September 9th. Do you really think the army was unaware and could not have stopped this from ever happening as they had during the days of the third Palestinian intifada earlier this year? Still thinking? How about the countless eye-witnesses (four of whom I have spoken to) who tell of military officers spectating as the young men climbed the embassy building? The officers who when asked why they were not preventing these men from trespassing international boundaries replied ‘these are our orders’?

Fourthly, and so bearing that these acts are not in line with the peaceful nature of protests praised the world over, and from the fact that the incredible power-imbalance and consistent slighting to Egyptian dignity & self-determination were not only unfair but were going to naturally result in a reaction that sooner or later was going to be obscenely offensive and yet not represent a modicum of what those slighted have felt for so long, nor that these marched protests were publicized days ahead of time and were easily preventable by the military, and the fact that  many eye-witness accounts describe a complete military coordination with what happened I ask you..who comes out the victor?

Are you aware that the Ministry of Interior is now re-officially in ‘Emergency-law’ mode (we were never out of Emergency law as a people, but the ruler has now decided to invoke such words as ‘thuggery’ and ‘foreign agendas’ in half-heartedly justifying the exacting dull knife with which it plans to shred the revolution with). Imprisonment on grounds of political dissent is now a free-for-all, military and MOI violence is at an all time high, and now the perfect ploy has set the ground for SCAF to land-slide lock-down the state.

I should remind you that prior to the Jan 25 Revolution, the emerging political struggle was between the son of the impeached president, Gamal Mubarak, and SCAF, who wanted a military man in power instead. The Revolution of January 25 came to happily remove Gamal Mubarak in the name of democracy and twitter for the sake of SCAF. Or were you not aware that the military generals in power now were in the Pentagon up until a few days before Mubarak was coup’d?

I am not for the burning of the Israeli embassy. I am not a Jew hater. I do not believe all Israelis are evil. I am opposed to Zionist-apocalypticism, the desecration of a people’s right to land, apartheid and the transgression of Israel on Egyptian borders.  I am for a representative government that expresses the will of the people, and the will of the Egyptian people is the removal of *apartheid* Israel.  The weakest of faith is to express these ideals and communicate them as opposed to sleeping with the Israeli government. I don’t have the answers to world peace, but I know what oppression is when I see it, repression when I live it.  We in Egypt are bracing for a crack-down on freedoms of expression and political activism more brutal than the days before January 25. So when we go, remember that others will come after us, and will continue to do so until justice is served. Justice is not to wipe Israelis off the face of the earth. But it certainly is not what we are living today, and so long as you choose to remain uninformed, unaware and inactive of our plight here, you will continue to feel insecure at home and have to send your sons and daughters far away to fight people who want nothing to do with you. There is no easy route, but it’s better late than never to wake-up.  Having woken up 50 years after our first revolution was subverted, I can comfortably say that at least that’s what we think here in Egypt.

Hey guys, just a very quick brief on the project I am working on:

    Name: El Raseef
Purpose: Liberating Innovation in the Egyptian Nation
How: Creating the social, cultural, educational & practical space to create, innovate, & collaborate.
What: 1- A monthly booklet called El Raseef with 3 chapters; Khorougat, Maharat, & Shabaket Wasl; focusing respectively on better spending free time, learning to do things you love to do, & community work in Egypt.
2- A monthly meeting (Flash Hub- http://bit.ly/k2wJG2 ) hosted by El Raseef.
3- Drive to open a Centre for Social Innovation in downtown Cairo, Egypt. (Uber-Hybrid co-working coffee house for wisdom, arts, & social work). This place is a place for people to love Egypt the way they best know how to, whatever way that is.

So if these are things that interest you or you know people who would be interested in seeing the likes of such activities grow in Egypt, my birthday is your opportunity to participate in that change. If not, I much prefer a Happy Birthday card about what the purpose of life is in your opinion.

Just wanted to write about sitting here waiting for Mubarak to be tried.. I realize the historic undertones of this event but I can't help but feel the context with SCAF and what is happening with heavy attacks on Tahrir that this is the last time they want to see people in Tahrir..this is placation.. A necessary step, but we will not stop here- this is a trial against Mubarak for ordering the killing of protestors & financial corruption- what about working tirelessly denigrating Egyptians for 30 years? and the narrator continues to talk about trusting Egyptian jurisdiction and that we trust the judges etc.. hmm..

I haven't had time and apparently won't have time to tell everyone what I'm doing or what I'm working on the way I would like to (nicely and neatly) so I'll just blurt it out in 2 minutes and you'll excuse any inconsistency in my writing (not my logic) because I'm running between Tahrir & a perpetual lack of sleep. Here goes:El Raseef is a social enterprise whose mission is the tahrir of innovation. Our mission is to foster & support creative & innovative solutions to everyday problems with everyday resources. Our approach is based on 4 core beliefs: 1- Everyone has value 2- Listen to each other 3- Give each other a chance 4- Support one another. We believe in decentralization, mass localism, and the CSI theory of change. We believe that you can. We're liberating imprisoned creativity at a sidewalk near you. Of course El Raseef means sidewalk in Arabic.

    Here's the plan:

1- The Booklet (pocket size). El Raseef is an invitation to live today, the Egypt we dream of tomorrow. In it are 3 chapters: Khrougat, Maharat, & Shabaket Wasl. Respectively, they are invitations: An invitation to explore the various cultural/traditional/alternative (non-mainstream) places & events in Cairo (we have a lot of those in Egypt); An invitation to learn something you love or wish you could do (Carpentry, Oil painting, photography, Guitar or Oud, Aikido, Capoeira, etc..); and finally; an invitation to join the deluge of initiatives, NGOs, civic sector groups that are working to make the world a better place. All in all it is an invitation to live today, the Egypt we dream of tomorrow. We started at 2,000 copies, this month 4,000, next month insha'Allah 6,000 and hope to reach 10,000 by end of year. 2- The Flash Hub. A monthly gathering of the city's community-working minds. Projects, ideas, dreams, and hope. Come spend some intimate time with your practical love for Egypt on a big canvas paper, then share it and listen to everyone else, then open floor to network and collaborate for a better Egypt. It's like having a hub, but only for a few hours a month.

3- The Hub. The Centre. The Space. The Place. The all-encompassing coolest thing dying to come to life in Cairo. A co-working space. A free theatre (or space to perform). A place for workshops. A House of Coffee. An Art Therapy Centre. I've actually found a place that's suitable, and I'm praying to God Who has been so kind to me to just grant me this one more wish (tongue-in-cheek as I have many more but God is Good!!). It's cooperative. It's sustainable. It's green culture. It's arts. It's innovation. It's experimental & it's alternative. It's the RENAISSANCE IN THE HEART OF CAIRO!!!!

4- A coordinating network to speak on behalf of the social sector with regards to civil sector policy. We ended up in the mess that Egypt was today because of a lack of civil involvement- nothing more and nothing less. That's not to say that civic involvement in social sector was not effective- but on a matter of scale, NGOs and the like appeared to be in a bit of isolation, particularly as funding came from abroad with specific objectives or guidelines that sometimes struck the culture the wrong way. At any rate a lack of confidence and mistrust is evident throughout the sector (not to blanket all there are some super duper ngos working for years). Whatever the problem, now's the time to coordinate and get active and make sure that kids know from the beginning in the school concepts such as social entrepreneurship and giving back and community responsibility and that kinda thing- don't leave your form of civic involvement to Ramadan & Eid and reduce it to sending food bags- that's good but there's so much more to life!!!!

There is infinitely more I could write, and the branchings in my head from each of these points are great, but now you get the picture. I thought it important you know- Either we shared time in Toronto, or in Cairo, Civic sector, school, detention, masjid, uni, family, basketball. To my friends & everyone I have grown up with, I carry you with me wherever I go even if we don't talk.

These are our hopes, these are our dreams, and I pray for nothing more than to be part of making these dreams come true, and I'm striving with all I can to be first out of a desire to get it done, and all I ask for is no praise & no recognition. Please comment & spread & share & engage & get involved & love Egypt the way you want to. Talk to me about the project if it speaks to you in anyway, or share it with someone with whom you think it might.

This wasn't written with care, but it was written with love. love.

Sparking Social Innovation in Egypt (II): The Flash Hub

    World's First Official Flash Hub
Place: Makan, by Sa’d Zaghloul Station. Cairo, Egypt
Date: Monday June 6th, 2011 (In 5 days)
    Time: 7:30-11:00pm

The Flash hub is a fusion of two concepts: A Flash Mob, & a Hub. A Flash Mob is this: http://mashable.com/2010/06/20/flash-mob-videos/#VQ3d3KigPQM. A Hub, like a bee hive, is a place of convergence- converging ideas, efforts, innovation, collaboration, etc.. In the context of Social Enterprise, it is where social entrepreneurs and the people working to make the world a better place sustainably individually or collectively call home (for their work). *The Flash Hub is proudly a 100% Egyptian, Post-Revolution innovation.* Its format and concept are shared here out of a firm sense of unity with the world's peoples & a belief that it can help bring those working towards acquiring a space to host & support social innovators a step closer to drawing support from their local community & achieving their dream.

Why a Flash Hub? One could argue for the perpetual need of any city to have at least one ‘Centre for Social Innovation’ in it; a place individuals, groups, & NGOs call home as they operate on different ways to make the world a better place. In light of the revolution in Egypt, there has been a tremendous spike in the need for a space to accommodate these sporadic efforts. The civil groups that emerged after January 25th all have very similar characteristics: Youth, often people who recently met as a direct result of the revolution, varying group sizes, incredible momentum, incredible optimism, & no place to work.

The brave souls of Egypt willing to fight the good fight and spend an increased amount of their time for social causes- Political & environmental awareness, economic development, human rights & social justice, political & environmental activism, cultural activism, etc.. these hundreds, no, thousands of grassroots efforts sprang forth on the scene immediately after February 11th (many during the protests) and (without need for surprise) the societal infrastructure in place never could have hoped to be prepared for them.

The problem is this: As youth now working on the civil front of making Egypt a better place we meet in one of three places: noisy expensive cafes with pop/top 40/electronica distractingly in our ears; affordable street cafes that are noisy with people talking and cars honking and black smoke and whatever else you can expect from your average Cairo street; or we meet at someone’s house and eventually have to keep our voices down when the kids sleep early or the parents have work the next day. Some have been fortunate to be loaned spaces by businesses, older NGOs, or burgeoning political parties (when circumstances allow) to meet and organize, but even those cases are no where near comfortable & certainly don't lend themselves to any sense of stability.

In short, there is no place to accommodate the tremendous energy and enthusiasm and activity going in to making Egypt better. And no one place ever will. For the most part, the spaces available are governmental buildings (In Egypt many governmental buildings are old, historic buildings that are absolutely stunning and would be very fitting for co-working spaces- except they are under government bureaucracy- so repel any attempt at rejuvenation for now), or places for consumption, or private places. What we need are community 'centers' with the spirit of revolution, places where you can come work on making the world a better place however you like to.

Straight to it- The Flash Hub- Event Details:

The Flash Hub is split in three phases: 1- Ideation 2- Presentation 3- Collaboration.

1- Each person is given big white canvas sheets with pens & markers. You are given 40 minutes to think openly, creatively, & visually about a project you are dedicating your time to or wish to begin. This time is dedicated to your project, you are asked to put your phones on silent and think of nothing but your project; how to bring it to life, who you would need to contact, what the next step is, what you don't have, the steps you need to make it happen or take it to the next level, etc.. You are also served a warm drink of your choice at this time. If you are part of a group, you may work on the same project.

2- Then time is given to each person to summarize their project & what they hope to achieve by it. 3 minutes for just ideas, 4 minutes for those actually in the middle of execution. Bias towards action, & the point is brevity.

3- Finally, the floor is open for discussion & collaboration. Participants are encouraged to engage others about their ideas, to network, and familiarize themselves with each other & their projects.

This is the recommended time break-down for a Flash Hub: 30 minutes open doors, 40 minutes ideation/development, 75 minutes presentation, 75 minutes open space for collaboration.. Average attendance of 25 participants.

It is also suggested that you pick a monthly date and stick to it as much as possible to make it a regular event- this gives a sense of normalcy an allows more people to prepare to come and invite their friends- and invite their friends they will.

The Flash Hub is a tool. Standing alone, it is a regular gathering with a pre-determined format. However, as part of a well-thought out plan to acquiring a space, or even to pull focus towards any idea- it is a highly-effective tool.

So here's hoping every city in every country in the world has a place beaconing light and hope by supporting those who propagate the light of hope in credance of a better tomorrow.

In my next post, I'll introduce the organizational context of the first Flash Hub in Egypt, and will review who came in & lessons learned.

    Flash Hub!!!

This post is part of the "Sparking Social Innovation in Egypt" series also run at socialearth.org . Ahmed Nazmi currently resides in Cairo, Egypt, where he is a part of 'El Raseef',
a Social Enterprise working towards fostering & supporting creative & innovative grassroots approaches to everyday problems (under registration). We make it our mission to remove the obstacles that stand before creativity, grassroots work, and civic solutions to civil problems. We advocate for mass localism and believe the world is experiencing a fundamental paradigm shift in the way we approach our lives- a shift where government role is much more minimal and citizens play a much more empowered role in their daily affairs.
